However, if it is not installed, you can use the official repository of your OS to install it using the terminal. This is the most direct and recommended method to install it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my case, I will use Ubuntu, but any of these commands can be adapted to any other distributions you are using. The application includes a button <strong>&#8220;Install VMware Tools&#8221;<\/strong> that you must click before following the next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"364\" height=\"309\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_install_button.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_install_button.jpg 364w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_install_button-300x255.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Now you will notice that you will have a mounted disk image, which includes all the necessary files, just like in the image below:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"712\" height=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_cd_mounted_ubuntu.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_cd_mounted_ubuntu.jpg 712w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_cd_mounted_ubuntu-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>First, you will have to copy the file with the following format <strong>VMwareTools.x.x.x.x-xxxx.tar.gz<\/strong> (this may change depending on the version) to the desktop.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"391\" height=\"459\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_copy_file_ubuntu.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_copy_file_ubuntu.jpg 391w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_copy_file_ubuntu-256x300.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Then you must extract the file you previously copied to the desktop. You can do this by right-clicking on the file, and clicking <strong>&#8220;Extract here&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"374\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_extract_file_ubuntu.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_extract_file_ubuntu.jpg 374w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vmware_tools_extract_file_ubuntu-288x300.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-theme-palette-7-background-color has-background\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: If you don&#8217;t have a desktop interface, you can do all of this from the terminal <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-tar-gz-on-ubuntu\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"17955\">using the tar command<\/a> to extract the files to wherever you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should notice that there is a new folder on the desktop called <strong>&#8220;vmware-tools-distrib&#8221;<\/strong>.
